Fought Everywhere, Trained Where It Counts

Cyrus Washington has fought Muay Thai in more than ten countries. He appeared on the Muay Thai Challenge reality show. He lived and trained in Thailand for three to four years — not on a two-week vacation, but long enough to absorb the sport at its source.

“He’s fought in probably over 10 countries. He’s on the challenge of Muay Thai reality show. Lived in Thailand for 3 or 4 years,” is how Kevin Ross introduces him in the Punishment program. That introduction is not hype. It is a resume.

Washington brings an international perspective to the Punishment Muay Thai course. He has felt what Thai fighters throw. He has trained with them daily. He has adapted and survived in gyms where nobody spoke his language and nobody cared about his record — only whether he could fight.

What He Teaches in Punishment

Washington’s sections in Punishment Muay Thai focus on three areas: countering, clinch work, and combination building.

His countering is built on a simple principle — make them miss, then make them regret it. “We’re going to do a counter to straight punches, all right? It’s really good for big straight punches, like a big straight right…” he explains in the Zoning Off technique. The lesson is about angles. Step off the line. Let the punch go past you. Now you have position and they have nothing.

His clinch throws come from years of training in Thailand, where clinch work is not optional. The waist throw, the sweep off the block, the entries that set up knees — these are techniques that Thai fighters drill daily and Western fighters rarely practice.

His combination work ties it together. Low kicks off defensive movement. Sweeps off the catch. Counters that flow into offense without resetting. Every technique connects to the next.

Part of the Punishment Team

Washington is one of four fighters and coaches featured in the Punishment Muay Thai program, curated by Lion Fight World Champion Kevin Ross. His international experience and Thailand training make him the right person to teach the techniques that most American Muay Thai gyms skip.
